What should I know before I choose a builder?
The reputation of your builder is the greatest assurance that you will have of the quality of construction. Learn enough about your builder to make the right decision; below are some consumer tips to help find the right builder.
[*] Hire a licensed contractor.
Most residential builders are required to have a state license. If your contractor is licensed in the state of Minnesota, you can check the status of their license online, at the Minnesota Department Of Commerce License Lookup Search.

Town And Country Builders is licensed in Minnesota under the name "L P ENTERPRISES NORTHERN MN INC (DBA: TOWN COUNTRY BUILDERS)". Our license number is 20052659, and you can view our licence status here.

[*] Contact your state or local builders association.
The association will have more specific information on any one contractor. In Northern Minnesota, you can contact the Arrowhead Builders Association.
[*] Contact the Better Business Bureau.
They may be able to tell you if any complains have been filed against a contractor. Your contractor should be able to provide you with answers about any complaints. You can visit the Better Business Bureau and the Minnesota Better Business Bureau online.
[*] Ask for references.
Ask your contract for names of references in your area. Be sure to contact and ask former customers if they are satisfied with the contractors work. Ask if they encountered any problems, and how they were resolved.
Finally, ask to see buildings similar to those you are interested in and where they are located.
[*] Ask questions.
Talk to your contractor and ask any questions you might have before you make a decision. Also, be sure to ask them the following questions.
  • How long have you been a contractor?
  • Where and under what name?
  • Has the name of the company changed?
  • Who are your subcontractors?
  • How long have your subcontractors been working for you, and how much experience do they have on your specific project?
  • Have you been the subject of any legal actions regarding your work?
  • Who will be cleaning up during and after the project and how much does that service cost?
  • Ask if they can put the estimated start and finish dates for your project in writing. Keep in mind: Justifiable delays can occur during any project.
